Since its inception in 1994, Music Midtown has been regarded as Atlanta’s preeminent festival for fans of any and all types of music, be it rock and roll, hip hop, pop, electronic, or everything in between.

According to Doug Shipman, “People need to hold the persons who are establishing these decisions accountable and show their unhappiness. This is part of the cultural fabric,” One of the festivals in Atlanta that has been running the longest is called Music Midtown.
It first began in 1994, continued until 2005, and then resumed in 2011 after a sabbatical of six years. Upwards of 50,000 people attended the Music Midtown festival in 2021, resulting in tens of millions of dollars’ worth of economic activity for the city of Atlanta. The festival has been hosted annually in Piedmont Park since since it was revived.
But on Monday, August 1, Music Midtown made the announcement that it would not be able to return in 2022. According to Rolling Stone, insiders confirmed that Georgia’s firearms regulations were the reason for this decision. In accordance with the laws of Georgia, individuals are permitted to carry firearms in any public areas of the state, including parks.
The conclusion of a recent court case upheld the right of the Atlanta Botanical Garden to enforce a gun ban because the garden leases its property from the city on a long-term basis. However, the decision did not address short-term tenants of public property, such as Music Midtown, who most likely would not have the same standing as the garden in this case.
In addition to that, Republican Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia enacted a new law earlier this year that makes it possible for anyone to carry concealed pistols in public without first acquiring a licence to do so. Without these rules, it is impossible to say how many people would have been able to lawfully bring concealed guns into Music Midtown.
One of the artists who was scheduled to perform at the festival this year, Maude Latour, told Rolling Stone, “Music and community is absolutely needed right now, and I hope this cancellation is a wake-up call to what it means for guns to be openly carried — we cannot feel safe to enjoy the beauty of life with the threat of unchecked gun violence.” The festival was canceled due to the threat of unchecked gun violence.
The effects of these rules are felt not only in Music Midtown but also well beyond its borders. Not only do other significant festivals, such as Shaky Knees and the next One Musicfest, take place in Atlanta’s parks, but also dozens of other large gatherings and community arts and cultural events take place there as well.
In effect, these rules not only make it more likely that people would have access to firearms, but they also endanger the ability of artists to make a living. A musician named Tyler Lyle from Atlanta, who plays in the band the Midnight and was scheduled to perform at Music Midtown with them, states the following: “Nobody who lives outside of Atlanta has any interest in visiting Atlanta since it is that place.
That was the attitude that permeated western Georgia, where I spent my childhood. It’s like the enemy among those Georgians who live outside of the metro region, and whatever that conservative Georgians can do to stick it to rock and roll and liberals at the same time is a win for them.” As things stand, the City of Atlanta is not in a position to do anything to make things simpler for Music Midtown or any of the other events that take place on public land.
Doug Shipman, the president of the Atlanta City Council, has stated that he would be working with the city attorney to see what can be done, but he has also noted that Georgia law precludes the city from implementing gun restrictions that are more stringent than those that are already on the books in the state.
According to him, it is highly likely that the issue will have to be postponed until the state legislature reconvenes in January 2023. At that time, they will be able to consider potential solutions, such as a carveout that would permit ticketed events held on public property to implement weapons bans.

However, it should be noted that this is a significant cause for concern. I am unable to determine if this is a result of the policy that was intended or one that was not.
But I would hope that as we move into the next state legislative session in January, the state legislature takes a look at this and actually gives some serious thought to the question of whether or not this is the type of influence that we want to have. Or, is it possible for us to draft a policy that would exempt huge festivals and events that need tickets? If we have the desire to do so, we may formulate other policies.
On the other hand, given the current state of affairs and the policies that we now have in place, I believe this may be a sign of the direction in which we are moving. I am not aware of any additional events that are going to be canceled; but, based on the talks I have had, I do know that any major festival is definitely considering how it wants to run right now.
- And even events that do not necessarily have limits on firearms or executing searches — simply large crowds — I believe that everyone attending is thinking about how they want to behave themselves and the responsibility that is involved with it.
- I want to make sure that everyone who expressed interest in going is aware that this is something that no one in the city wanted to take place.
This is the very worst-case situation, and we are going to keep looking into whether or not there are any other choices available to us. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, public policy does have some effects. In addition, I believe it is essential for individuals to voice their disapproval to those who are responsible for formulating these policies and hold them accountable.
